Dear all,

I have this problem with MSDE Installation:

I install MSDE then from prompt c:\sql...\msde\
I type: setup INSTANCENAME=pippo SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=pp
then I restart but I see on the toolbar the icon of the SQL server but Ihaven't any Server or Service, in the Icon there is not the green signal nether the red signal, the little circle is white.

what I need to do?

and uid wath's

thanks,
luca|||I'm having the same problem. I'm using Windows 2000 Professional.

I do have the SQL Server 2000 CLIENT Tools installed on my computer, but as far as I know, those are just for connecting to SQL db's, it's not the actual engine; that's why I want MSDE on my machine. Would those client tools be conflicting with my MSDE installation?|||I've tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it...

When I double click the little server icon in the tray and I go to hit the green play button, there are no services in the dropdown menu to start.

Anyone know how to solve this?|||Hi Luca,

The SAPWD switch lets you set the sa (system administrator, SQL Server's superuser) password which you shouldALWAYS do because of worms that have taken advantage of it.

uid is user id, the user you can use to log into MSDE.

Don|||Hi Matt,

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about having the SQL Server client tools installed. You can use those to connect to and manage the engine of any SQL Server or MSDE installation on the local machine or across the network that you have permissions to access.

Do you mean that those don't include the database engine? If so, yes, that's right. So you would indeed want to install MSDE in order to use databases locally. And no, the client tools won't conflict with your MSDE installation at all.

I don't know why you aren't getting any services listed. If you go into Computer Management from the Control Panel do you have MSSQLSERVER listed under Services and Applications | Services? If so, can you start it from there?

This could be because you already had the client tools installed when you installed MSDE. So you probably have to add a registration to the local MSDE. Go into Enterprise Manager, expand Microsoft SQL Servers in the treeview, right-click on SQL SErver Group and select New SQL SErver Registration from the popup menu. In the available servers select either LOCAL (it might say LOCALHOST) or the machine name. If it isn't listed, type it in. Then complete the other steps in the wizard.

Does that solve it?

Don|||Don:

Since my last post I UNinstalled MSDE. You did clear up a lot for me though. I was unsure if the Client Tools were somehow conflicting, but now I know they won't.

I'll REinstall MSDE and register it in Enterprise Manager and see what happens.

Thanks for your help!
