actually, Service Manager should be present in the tray area...
can you please confirm, browsing the installed services in the control
panel->services applet that MSDE is properly installed?

MSDE SP4 installation problem
along with the install files and I've tried most every combination that
makes sense in the command line. Here's just one example:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun SECURITYMODE=sql UPGRADEUSER=sa
UPGRADEPWD=apasswoord
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v c:\mylog.log
It's the default instance. The setup command simply returns immediately, no
log created etc.
I'm at a loss to know what's wrong here.
Thanks for any input you can offer.
jimI believe I have fixed this, appears to be in the comand line arguments. I
couldn't get them to work as in the supplied examples, but still haven't

MSDE Sort Page
I would like to install MSDE by selecting options from the
screen and not by typing commads at command prompt, just
the same way of installing SQL Server 2000.
I would also like to change the Sorting and collation
options under MSDE.
Please Help.
Thanks

my message was complete... LOL
I apologise if it was not clear
you have to implement a vb/vc/.net/delphi pre-installer, which collects all
user's input regarding settings like SAPWD, DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS,
INSTANCENAME, SECURITYMODE, TARGETDIR, DATADIR and COLLATION (for sort
order)...
then you have shell out to setup.exe passing all parameters (or setting them
in the referenced INI file)
as regard COLLATION, you can not change the system collation after the
instance has been installed...

MSDE setup failed
thot had done all correctly ie the setup.exe sapwd=xxxxx securitymode=sql from the command prompt
was told that setup has failed
where is the problemWas there any other information provided with the error message? If the message was "Setup Failed to configure the server" then this might help:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816499&Product=sql
Also, there should be a setup log created that might have more information.
MSDE Setup and first database
after installing MSDE, how do I create the database for the application?
I cannot provide a createdb.sql script to the user because there is no
queryanalyzer or similar tools.
How can I run the create query from the setup? or what is the recommended
method for doing this?
Thank You!
Hi,
Give a batch file to create the database. All you have to do is double click
the batch file. batch file should contain:-
OSQL -Usa -Ppassword -S servername -Q'Create database
dbname' -o'c:\createdb.log'
Save the command inside a .BAT file and send to client side to create the
database. Instad of giving the -Q parameter you
can also input a .SQL file which contans sequence of TSQL commands.
Thanks

MSDE setup / installation
I am a beginner in this, may I asked some basic question
1. do I need any version of MSDE before installing MSDE2000 sp3?
2. I have an environment with two servers, each of these has a web server
with a DC running, and I have written a .NET application for administrator
to maintain user a/c in this domain. Now, I would like to use a MSDE server
for keeping logs.
Can I have an installation of MSDE on each of these servers such that the
two installation would synchronize on a periodic basis?
Please note that changes of records are expected on either of these servers!
TIA

no, you can just directly install MSDE Rel A (sp3a level) and upgrade to sp4
via http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp4.mspx MSDE package (or
directly install MSDE at the sp4 level... but currently it's not clear to me
if general users not owning a "required" SQL Server license as per
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp are eligile for
direct sp4 use... just a note, Microsoft representatives already exposed a
refresh of MSDE Rel A updated at sp4 level will be made available...)

yes, you can install MSDE on both servers, and even provide a replication
paht between the 2 MSDE instances, as MSDE supports merge and snapshot
replication
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...lover_694n.asp)
but, unfortunately, without Enterprise Manager tool it will be not trivial
to set it up

If your download file for sp3 is about 60-70mb then know it will install
MSDE at the same time if not present. You would be better using the
MSDERelA package (which includes sp3).

Yes. You can have as many instances per server as you like (well up to
16 anyway - I think thats the right number). Yes you can use DTS to
keep the servers synchronised (you would normally pick one as the master
however). Just make sure your database and table design are decent (ie:
Primary Keys etc).

MSDE Service permissions
I'm installing MSDE 2000 with a custom application (launched using
setup.exe, not integrating merge modules) and am having a problem with the
service permissions for SQL services. The custom app installer is being
build with Installshield Pro 6.3.
Everything works fine for admin users, but MSDE won't start for non-admin
users. The MSSQL$Instance service won't start unless it's logging on a Local
System.
I need non-admin users to have access to the database.
Is there any way to setup MSDE on install to work for everyone?
What does one need to do to manually configure it after install to work for
everyone?
Thanks,
leon.

usually MSDE is installed setting the relative services account to
LocalSystem, that provide (far) enought privileges (on the local machine)
for all logged users...
have a look at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...l/THCMCh18.asp
for more restrictions..

|||Hi Andrea,
By default the services use Local System option for log on. This worked fine
for all admin users but did not work for a non-admin user. When a non-admin
user logs in (local or domain user), the services won't start using Local
System. (side note: this is on a WinXP Pro machine). The non-admin user
cannot start or stop any service.
We did get it to work for the non-admin user by using the local
administrator account for log on (I goofed when trying it the first time by
using domain admin password instead of local admin password). This is not
the way we want to go, but it's the only way it does work right now.
I did find one thing via your link, in the Installation Recommendations:
"Create a least privileged local account with which to run the SQL Server
service. Use this account when you are prompted for service settings during
setup. Do not use the local system account or an administrator account. "
There is no prompt when installing MSDE. What exactly is a "least priviledge
local account"?
Any other suggestions are most welcome!
Thanks for your help.

actually they shoul'd run, as all this is intended to work this way... SQL
Server is run under another privileged account than the current logged
account, which only needs to connect to the specified server and query for
information..
perhaps you have to check your local policies...

I usually use a local account (not LocalSystem), with enought rights on
relevent share(s) if needed..

no, there's not... that info is for a full blown SQL Server installation..
you have to set that property after MSDE installed, accessing the services
management applet... perhaps it can be done via WMI, but never tried it..

We created an "msde" user, removed it from Users group, set it as the Log On
As account (it is listed in the "Log on as a service" policy), gave full
access rights for the data files to Everyone, and it doesn't work.
So you have installed MSDE 2000 A and had its service (MSDE$InstanceName)
starting with a non-admin log in?
If so, you must have some magic touch because we're trying this on 2
separate machines with the same failure on each. We'll be trying it on a
fresh XP install shortly, but I don't really expect different results.
Even when logged into the XP as an administrator, setting the MSDE service
login account to "msde" causes the service to fail on a start attempt. It
gives the following error:
Could not start the MSDE$... service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access is Denied
How do you access the "start at boostrap" property of a service?
thanks,

I do always use a local admin account, and I never use the special
LocalSystem account, created just for this purpose and never use an actual
local or domain administrator account. The account must be in the local
Administrators group if you're installing SQL Server on Windows NT or
Windows 2000. You can create this account before you begin installing SQL
Server, or you can change the account under which SQL Server runs at a later
time.
Setting less privileges is intended in not using a Domain Admin account for
network protection.

Sorry, referring to the automatic service startup as "start at bootstrap"

MSDE Seems to Install - Service Manager Loads - No Connection
I uninstalled MSDE 2000 prior to installing SQL Server 2000 Developer
Edition. I then found I could not use Developer Edition with Visual Basic
..net Standard Edition and tried to reinstall MSDE. The installation seems
to go fine but when the Service Manager loads is tells me "Not Connected -
\\" no servers are in the Server drop-down and no services are listed in
the Services drop-down. I am very new to all of this and would very much
appreciate any help/advice you could offer. I have since uninstalled
Developer Edition to no avail. I am running Windows XP Pro.

you can modify this behaviour enabling the desired/required network protocol

I posted this in the vb group as well, but just in case...
I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong, but perhaps the instructions we
use for classroom/lab installs of MSDE to work with Visual Studio .NET 2003
will be helpful:
<quote>
1. Before you begin, check the PC to ensure there are no remnants of prior
MSDE installation attempts hanging around. The place to check is: C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server. If you locate a folder named Microsoft SQL
Server, delete it and its contents!
2. Execute the file: SQL2KDeskSP3.exe(or whatever the file name for your
MSDE download is). This step will extract the contents of the file to a
designated folder. Make a note of the destination folder. You'll need it
later. This step does not install MSDE (although the dialogs seem to hint
that it does)!
4. Navigate to the folder you created in Step 2. In that folder, you will
find a subfolder named MSDE. In MSDE, you will find SETUP.EXE. Executing
SETUP.EXE will install MSDE.
5. To execute SETUP.EXE correctly, you must supply an instance name and a
system administrator password as part of the command: i.e. the command must
be:
SETUP.EXE INSTANCENAME="NetSDK" SAPWD="yourSAPassword"
where yourSAPassword is your actual system administrator password. This
password is needed only to install MDSE, not to use it. Access to MSDE is
controlled by normal "NT Security" which should allow users access based on
network logon and password. It is very important the the INSTANCENAME
parameter be NetSDK, as this name will enable you to generate the sample
databases automatically instead of having to run SQL scripts from the
command line.
6. Once installation is complete, you must reboot the PC before you will
see MSDE. After the reboot, you should see the MSDE icon in SysTray.
7. You now must execute the file: ConfigSamples.exe to configure sample
applications and MSDE system databases. This step will also create user
databases in the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\Data.
</quote>
If you have trouble locating the ConfigSamples.exe, it's a small file
(56k) and I can send it to your email if needed.
Hope this helps.

MSDE Productcode
I am installing MSDE along with my app using the MS Toolkit. When I install MSDE and then my app, everything works fine. However if later I uninstall my app (not MSDE instance) and rerun the setup.exe, it disables my app setup saying that MSDE prerequis
ite has to be installed. But MSDE is already on my machine as I did not uninstall it.
Someone pointed out that the productcode should remain the same for the setup. But I never change it. It's a fixed GUID.
Any ideas anyone. Thanks
Dev,
This is a known issue with the RC build of the Toolkit. We'll be fixing it
for RTM.

MSDE Problems
Can anyone help me?
Regards Kristoffer
Windows XPI'm not an MSDE install expert by any means but I would go out to the command prompt (Start->Run->cmd->OK) and type in
osql -L
That will give you a list of all the Sql Server and MSDEs on your computer. Hopefully one will by Kris\SomeInstanceName. Try that name or whatever name turns up.
You might also check in the Setup.Ini file that is in the same directory as you installed MSDE from. If you open it in Notepad or equivalent tool look for the
INSTANCENAME=SomeInstanceName
That should correspond to one of the name returned by osql -L
(local) is an all purpose name that just means "use this server".sql
MSDE over the network
I'm installing MSDE in a networked environment. I'm using SQL-DMO to find all
instances of MSDE on the network. *Usually*, this works great.
Unfortunately, sometimes MSDE instances refuse to advertise on the network.
I can't register them in Enterprise Manager or see them with SQL-DMO. I'm
using setup.exe to install these instances, and I'm setting
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0. I've run the svrnetcn.exe program, and each
vanished instance is in fact listening via TCP/IP and Remote Procedure Calls.
I've added each instance as an exception in the Windows Firewall on XP SP2.
Each disappeared instance has in fact been started. Local applications can
see these vanished instances, but networked applications cannot. There are no
other firewalls or packet filtering on the network. I'm behind a Microsoft
Wireless Base Station Router. Am I missing something?
This problem is about to drive me insane. I'm using the exact same
installation program and parameters to setup.exe, but some instances just
don't want to play on the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Are any of the MSDE instances installed on XP SP2? If the MSDE instance does
not have SP3 installed then XP will block MSDE from broadcasting its status.
You can see warnings about this in the system event log. This is the same
with Windows Server 2003.

MSDE on win98 / WinME
Most of the time SQL Server will not start.
If I am lucky and SQL Server will start I can not create a Database.
It will pop up a message 42000 18452.
Any ideas how to solve this?

what is the "verbose" message you got along with the 42000 exception?

are you mixing up trusted connection with user defined credentials for
login?
how and with what tool are you trying to connect to the MSDE instance?
if you use oSql.exe, the command line tool provided with MSDE, you have 2
different ways to connect..
specifying a trusted WinNT connection,
c:\...\>osql.exe -E -S(Local)
or with a standard SQL Server authenticated connection,
c:\..\>osql.exe -Usa -Pyourpwd -S(Local)

set it to 2.
This will enable SQL Security mode, which is used for Win9x & ME.

MSDE Not installing
setup SAPWD=somegreatpassword SECURITYMODE=SQL and off it goes, gathering information and starting to install.
After a short period of time where the status bar shows about 9 seconds left the status bar runs backwards down to zero and installation stops.
No error message, no crashes, just packs up its tent and goes away.
I have tried running setup from a batch file with the same results.
I have turned off my antivirus program as well as all other programs.

MSDE login problem
Accessing through network with enterprice manager at first didn't work.

But only the first time. After that login by SQL user and password is denied after restart local MSDE machine.
Anyone know why?

With this I mean access from other machines on the network. Local login is working ok.|||Solution found!
Install MSDE again with DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0.
Changing it afterwards with SQL Server enterprice manager doesn't work.

not that I'm aware of... anyway, MSDE installs by default disabling network
protocols and with Windows NT authentication only... you only have to set a
strong "sa" password...
this is the *standard*, and should be quite secure... but usually you will
need remote connections (which require TCP/IP or other preferred network
protocol to be enabled) ... if you do not need SQL Server authenticated
connections, you can go with the default "trusted" only...

again... unfortunately I do not know one :-(
but, again, it all depends on what you want to secure...
if you mean system stored procedures, usually (at least the problematic,
like xp_cmdshell and so on) they are "protected" requiring sysadmins
privileges
on the other side, if you mena your own procedures, it' up to you to remove
"guest" permission to them =;-D
so I usually remove guest login and deny public involvement... and I do
manage privileges in user's groups...

MSDE Intstallation Problem
When installing MSDE (run setup) the process starts; when it is nearly at the end (progbar rigth), then suddenly the progbar goes very quick to the left side and the installtion is over.
There ist no error msg or something like that. The only event code is 11708(information) from the msi installer.
I have an XP pro System (not SP2).
Thx in advance for helpsry double post|||I'm also having this same problem, except I'm running XP Home.
I'm using the MSDE that comes with the SAMS Teach Yourself ASP.NET In 24 Hours book, and after I've typed in the command line:
setup SAPWD=password SECURITYMODE=sql
it begins to install. Then after the green bar goes back to left the dialog box closes and then nothing happens. According to the book I should be promted to resart my computer, but I'm not. And the MSDE icon doesn't appear in the system tray.
I've tried restarting my cmputer manually and also downloading MSDE from http://asp.net/msde but the same thing happens.|||Please refer to my post in this section under the subject: "Overcoming MSDE Setup Problems".

Have you tried my solution? Use DISABLEROLLBACK=1 and restart. Then delete the installed files and install again. It worked for me. I also tried to delete stuff from the registry with no success. Then I tried the DISABLEROLLBACK route and it worked.

MSDE installs almost 90% and then uninstalls itself
I am having a problem with installing MSDE on one of the Win2K client
machines. The MSDE setup runs to about 90% installation (progress bar shows
at least) and then seems like focus goes away from the setup progress bar and
then progress bar shows uninstalling (it does not say its uninstalling but
the progress bar starts going left instead of going right) and then setup
exits without any prompt.
For the records we are using MSDE released on August 5, 2000.
I can not ask much questions and will have a one time shot more to resolve
this issue on Thursday. Any help will be apreciated.

Anis

please add the
/L*v "c:\MsdeLog.txt"
command line parameter to your setup.exe call
this will enable verbose logging of the installation process (about 2mb)
where you can search for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries that define error conditions... about 10/15 lines after or before
that entries some (sometime a little cryptic) explanation of the problem is
provided..
anyway, before doing, please verify that File and Printer Sharing is set and
that the Server service is running

MSDE installation problem in Windows XP
We have been facing problems in installing MSDE 2000 in machines having
Windows XP. The installation starts and then after sometime it retraces back.
The error seems to be because of something related to SQLAgentSecurity.
I am attaching the error log details ( the portion which mentions about the
error) below.
Has anyone faced any similar issues? Can anyone help?
Regards,
Ani

you probably do not have File & Printer Sharing Services turned on.
please chek the control panel, Admin Tools - Services and (eventually) set
it to on.
