MSDE setup failed

was installing MSDE for use with Web matrix
thot had done all correctly ie the setup.exe sapwd=xxxxx securitymode=sql from the command prompt
was told that setup has failed
where is the problemWas there any other information provided with the error message? If the message was "Setup Failed to configure the server" then this might help:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816499&Product=sql

Also, there should be a setup log created that might have more information.

MSDE Setup Failed

Need Help !!!!

I'm trying to install MSDE on my computer - Dell 2.4 ghz
Operating system is Windows XP Professional.
I have already installed the WEB Matrix but having problems installing MSDE.
I keep getting this error message.

I receive this error message:

(Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error
logs for more information.)

Thanks In AdvanceSigh. Setting up MSDE is one of the most complex things that Microsoft has imposed on us.

What do the logs say? They're usually a pretty good source of information.

Don|||Hi Don,
Thanks for taking the time, Here's the latest log I found. see if this can help?
Thanks again

MSDE Replication ?

I am designing a web site which will use MSDE at the back end (on a remote hosting provider). Uers will be able to edit small amounts of data (in limited no. of tables) in the web application, whilst I will need to 'upload' much larger amounts (and differ
ent tables) on a daily basis.
My question is how to design the replication ?
a) Merge replicate the whole Db ? or ...
a) Split the database into two databases (one being the stuff that users/browsers can edit) and one being the other stuff that will be 'uploaded' and use different replication techniques for each ?
c) Any other way ?
Also, are there any limitations on replication with MSDE ?
Many Thanks
Also, is it possible to use the Enterprise Manager in the Developer Edition to manage the replication or is this in breach of the licensing ?
|||Sarah,
this article explains MSDE limitations/restrictions for use in replication,
and the licensing implications:

HTH,
Paul Ibison
|||Sarah,
I'm not sure about the topology. Presumably the website uses MSDE and you
need to replicate to a separate site (lets say B)? When you say 'upload' is
this a flow of data from the website to site B or vice versa? Is there any
posibility of data both at site B and the website being changed before
synchronization? When you 'upload' the data, is this the entire table(s) or
incremental changes?
Regards,
Paul Ibison
|||Hiya Paul,
Thanks for the link.
Re the topology ...
Website is running MSDE (say A) whilst I have a (home) server which can run MSDE or Developer Edition (say B).
Small amount of data/tables (say Tables-X) are updated by web users on A.
All data/tables are updated daily by me on B (this is the 'upload' TO the website).
It is possible that data in Tables-X will have been updated at both A and B and hence will need merging.
The other data changes (excepting Tables-X) will largely be updates to column values but also added rows (particularly early on in the sites lifetime).
I'm assuming I'll do a merge replication with B being the Publisher/Distributor and A being the Subscriber. (Or can I do a Merge Replication on Tables-X and Transactional replication on everything else ?)
|||Sarah,
I agree - merge for Tables-X. You'll need to consider conflict resolution,
or partition the data according to the subscriber eg use identity ranges, so
no conflicts will arise. If the other tables are only changed in one
direction then transactional would be definitely suitable there.
HTH,
Paul Ibison
|||Brilliant! Thanks Paul! That's reassuring
... but can I use the Development Edition of Enterprise Manager to handle or will this breach the licencing ?
|||This is one for MS licensing (a phone call). For what it's worth, my guess is that it is allowed, as I know of someone who uses the evaluation edition of SQL Server for the same purposes and insists it is legal.
HTH,
Paul Ibison
|||Many Thanks for your help Paul

MSDE Licensing In Web App?

I have an ASP.NET web application that will be accessed from the Internet.
Does the MSDE redistributable license cover this situation?
Thanks,
<WARNING: I'm not a lawyer>
Yes. It's commonly used that way. The biggest limitation is usually the
database size limit if you make good use of connection pooling.

If you are running on Windows Server and the external connections are not
from employees, then you need the EC. If they are employees, then you need
CALs for those employees.

MSDE install problem

Hi,

My computer OS is win2000 +sp3, I download the MSDE setup file(sql2kdesksp3.exe), I followed the instruction of the microsoft web site to install the msde, but during the windows configure the SQL server desktop engine, it hangs up there. I checked the setup log file, it has no error, it goes to sqlredis.exe, and stop there.

Can any one help me for this?

I really appreciated!

zgWhat is the command line you are using to install msde?

actually they are the same things... well, they are based on the same core
engine and bits, but are different version of the same DBMS...
please have a look at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluat...ew/default.asp and
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluat...s/choosing.asp for
differences among the editions
MSDE is only provided with the DTS-runtime, os ti can execute DTS packages
but not design new ones...

it really depends on your needs, and you probably better have a look at all
the versions comparisons for a better idea of your requirements...

MSDE for web applications

Hi, I am needing help on which MSDE version support 25 concurrent users. Can anyone help?

Creating an intranet that I would like to run on msde. My problem is that it wont allow more than one person to access the intranet at a time.

MSDE is running on windows 2000 with IIS.How do you know that MSDE is only allowing one person to access your intranet? Is there an error message it is throwing? If so what is it and how are you calling the data (maybe show us some code samples)?

MSDE for Testing, SQL Server for Deployment...?

I'm going to be starting a web application this week. I have quite a bit of experience with Access Databases, and I've also used MySQL (back in my PHP days, thank GOD for ASP.NET).
The server we use to host our websites allows us to use SQL Server databases, so I want to move in that direction, but I'm not really sure where to start.
If I download MSDE, and start a database with it on a site I will be developing locally (on my XP box), will it be difficult for me to transfer the database (or layout of the database) to a production server running SQL Server. I know they're basically the same database, but I'm just afraid to start with an MSDE database and then get the site nearly complete, and then not know how to transfer it to a SQL Server DB.

I'm particularly interested to know if the majority of the database creation will be done through queries (similar to MySQL) because I figure if it is, then I can use the same queries to create the database on both the local and production server.

I just want to make sure that downloading MSDE will be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps links or tutorials or some information on things to watch out for as I take on this process would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much. The same code that works on MSDE will work fine on SQL Server. You can use queries to create tables/views/stored procedures, or you can use Enterprise Manager or Visual Studio .NET (presuming you have the correct version - I am not sure what version is required of VS.NET to do DB work).|||Thanks for your reply douglas.reilly
Now if I am creating with queries, what's the best way to go about doing that exactly? Should I create a page that executes the query I type into a textbox? Or is there a better (probably more secure and reliable) way of doing it?

Thanks again for your help!

MSDE for High trafic website

Could I use MSDE for a web site that has 1 million hits per day; 300,000 of
it would be database requests? Or do I have to go with MSSQL?
Thanks Stephan
Stephan, MSDE is designed to work with about 25 concurrent users before the
slowdown from the workload governor becomes noticable. MSDE is intended for
use with small workgroups.
Anything over 8 concurrent operations will cause the workload governor to
kick in, which has the effect of slowing down each transaction by a few
milliseconds. If you don't have many concurrent users, it's not a big deal,
but if you have 300,000 DB requests per day that might be a problem.
Check out this article on MSDN for further info:

I use MSDE in a project with 20 concurrent workstations, which are polling
every 10 seconds for updates of some records, not very much. But sometimes
it happens that the workload gouvernor comes like a hammer, then it needs
from 2 up to 20 seconds before the next queries where processed. And this
is the big problem with this gouvernor, it doesn't come slow, if he starts,
he slows down the MSDE immediately very much.
But you could check SQLExpress, the "new MSDE", which has not longer such
gouvernor or other slowdowns. The limits for the new MSDE are 1 CPU, 1 Gb
Memory, no agent and so on.
But that's only what i read about it, if have not tested it in reality.
bye,
Helmut
|||Thanks! I will stick withMSSQL then.

MSDE Environment

Dear all,
i'm new in MSDE, yet, after i'd installed for MSDE ReleaseA which i
get from SQL web site, i realise that I can't run the MSDE without
fully SQL server install, may i know that whether i can run MSDE
without fully SQL SERVER install? if so, how to use it...
pls give me some guide on that, thanks in advance!!
MSDE IS Sql Server, and does not need full SQL Server installed (otherwise,
why MSDE?). MSDE Download does not come with good document on how to install
it properly for user who does not have experience on SQL Server. I recommend
search MS Knowledge base with key word "MSDE" to get get more detailed
installation guide.

When you run the MSDE Setup, it installs the SQL Server MSDE Edition Engine.
No tools are supplied with MSDE.
Full editions of SQL Server is not required to run MSDE. MSDE is an stripped
down Edition of SQL Server.
What are you trying to achive?
