MSDE Toolkit issue with windows 98

Hello,
My 1st attempt to install .Net framework, MSDE, my application and the databases during setup (using the MSDE deployment toolkit RC) works fine on windows xp. Now when I try to do the same for windows 98 SE machine, I am able to install .Net framweork an
d MSDE, but after that during the installation I get the following error message:
"An exception occured in the OnAfterInstall event handler of DBInstaller.CustomInstaller --> Unable to access service: Operating system does not support controlling a Windows service. A service can only be controlled on Windows NT, Windows 2000, or lat
er."
It's clear that when the setup tries to start the service to create the database etc it fails. Is this a known issue. I researched on web but couldn't find anything. Any ideas.
Thanks
dev
Any ideas..

MSDE Tookit thinks MSDE is not installed when it is.

I have multiple applications that will use the same named instance of MSDE. When I try to setup my second application using the MSDE Deployment addin it thinks that MSDE needs to be installed again. According to the flowchart it should bypass this and
just install my appliation. Any suggestions as to why my setup insists in needs to install another instance? My instance name is the same for all applications.
Thanks,
Bill
Bill in one of the previous messages someone from Microsoft mentioned that it is a known bug in the beta version of the toolkit. Hopefully it will be fixed.

MSDE Text datatype - unable to store more than 900 characters. (msde + visual studio 2003)

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get mytext datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters. I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populatethe information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a newsitem in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. Iimmediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after along news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,Isimply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and stillrecevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
Thanks a lot.
I think may be your create table statement was not executed correctly because text can grow it is not table space based SQL Server creates an Arithmetic pointer to the file. Try the link below see if you can download the eval edition of the SQL Server. Or you could drop the table and recreate it and test again. Hope this helps.

MSDE SP4 install problem

I attempted to install MSDE SP4 (file SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU) on a WinXP Pro SP2 machine.

Command used:

setup SAPWD="ourpw" SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v c:\MSDELog.log

Install log shows successful install.

MSDE appears to function properly, service starts automatically after reboot, etc.

I can open and work with DB's with a freebie 3rd party GUI called DbaMGR2K, through which I have added the necessary DB user for our locally running ASP application to use the db.

However, when I try to use the DB with our locally running ASP application - connecting with ADO from a dll we wrote, I get the following:

"[DNETLIB]{ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied"

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

make sure that you connect to the same database and you are using a valid login for connecting. Perhaps you have chosen another authentication mode within the ADO code ? That could explain either the one or the other error message you are getting.

I think we have solved the issue. We used the SQL Server Network Utility to enable TCP/IP (apparently not enabled by default) and now all appears well.

I wonder if there is a way to enable TCP/IP during the install process. Is there an install flag/option?

|||

>> Is there an install flag/option?

Most likely. The flag for this when installing SP3 was "DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0". I wouldn't think that they would have removed it for SP4.

MSDE sp3 install problems

I recently had to install 40 german NT 4 laptops with MSDE sp3.

I prepared a setup.ini file:
[Options]
DATADIR="C:\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\"
TARGETDIR="C:\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\"
SAPWD="AStrongPwd"
SECURITYMODE=SQL

and installed most of them sucessfully. Some of them I installed via network, some of them were installed from CD. I tested each installation by copying a prepared database into the data directory and tried to connect to this database using the specified sapwd and found out
When i installed from CD, I could connect to the databases.
Some of the network installs produce a logon failure. it looks like the sapwd was ignored during install - I could not figure out, which password was used, I uninstalled it and reinstalled from CD.

Does anyone know what's the reason for this behaviour?

Thanks,

clothildeGet any information from SQLSTP.LOG on those failed installations for this behaviour.

MSDE setup question

Hello:

I had partitioned my harddrive to have both XP PRO and Red Hat. Got fed up with all that and so used Partition Magic 8.0 to repartition the drive to be one 16 Gig drive. I still have over 8 Gig left on it even after installing VS .NET on it.

I have successfully installed Visual Studio .NET Pro 2003 on it and I can now write programs in VB and see it on my intranet at c:/wwwroot/.

I am now trying to install MSDE 2000 for Developers Using VS .NET. I have downloaded the file from Microsoft and then when I go to install it on my hard drive it tells me it cannot; I have to free up 92.44 Megs for it to be able to extract it to my c drive.

I am a newbee and any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!Sorry but have solved this problem too.

Turns out I was using the wrong download.

Thanx anyways.|||Ohh Boy, you are really working under a tight Hard drive. With 92.44 Megs, any software would complain about free space. Free up some space and try it. Some harddisk space is needed for paging and stuff, so its very normal your program complaining about the disk space. I hope thats what your problem is.

If you are having trouble installing the MSDE, take a look at my blog entry

MSDE setup problems

I am attempting to install SharePoint Services (with
MSDE) using all standard/default options. The WSS setup

Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server
error logs and setup error logs for more information.
Not sure where to find these two logs are located or why
the MSDE setup failed.

MSDE SetUp Hell: Newbie Help

I am trying to setup MSDE for the very first time. So I am absolutely a
newbie. I downloaded sql2ksp3 from microsoft site. I unpacked the file to a
folder and then clicked on setup.
I get an error message about using the command line to supply a strong
password and the setup exits...
I use the command line to supply a password like
setup SAPWD="Pwd777b7" and then the setup seems to install or change some
files.
I click on the setup again and I get an error an invalid Instance name name
error. I have read and reread the (from a first user's point of view) the
very unhelpful help file I download with MSDE setup.
I have been going back and forth on this. Anyone know what's wrong... Anyone
know of a URL where I can find a step-by-step method of installing MSDE.
Thanks in advance

you should have a new default instace of MSDE installed, with no network
protocols enabled and allowing only Windows authenticated connections..
please verify using the Windows Services applet (control panel->management
tools->services) you have a MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT entry for the
related services...

it failed as you tried that way to install a second default instance of MSDE
and ony 1 default instace is allowed... you can install other (up to 15, for
a max of 16 instances in total) named instances providing the additional
parameter
INSTANCENAME=whatever_name

if you can read/understand french,
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jm.doudoux/m...msde/msde.htm, if you can
read/understand italian, http://www.visual-basic.it/articoli/scMsde01.htm,
but I do not know english sites
anyway, you should not just click on the setup.exe boostrap installer but
call it from a command window and provide all the required parameters,
usually (depending on your needs) in the form of
c:\...\>setupe.exe INSTANCENAME=whatever SAPWD=your_strong_pwd
SECURITYMODE=SQL DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v "C:\MSDELOG.txt"
this typical command line will install a named instance named "whatever",
with "sa" login pwd = "your_strong_pwd", enabling SQL Server standard
connections (mixed mode authentication, allowing both integrated security a
standard SQL Server connections), enabling network protocols and thus
enabling remote connections and finally enabling verbose logging of the
installation process to a text file of about 2mb for a successfull
installation you can inspect in case of troubles for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries... this entries are localized in the particular MSDE localized
flavour, and about 10/15 lines before each entry some (sometime cryptic)
description of the problem will be reported...

MSDE Setup fails...

I don't think I've ever worked so long and tried so many suggestions,
recommendations and followed KB article processes in my life with so little
success -- in fact, none -- and so intransigent a set of symptoms. I hope
that there is someone here that will be able to help me.
To set the hardware scene: I have a 3 year old Sony Vaio with P4 HT 3.2
ghz, 1GB ram, 560 GB of hard drive and a new ATI video card. It has had
lots of software installed and removed over the last couple of years. My
wife has an almost identical eMachine that is 9 months old and is still in
the exact state that it was when it came out of the box. Both run XP Pro
sp2.
The problem: I purchased a copy of Pinnacle Studio Plus vers 10 video
editing software. With it I got also their media manager which uses MSDE.
I have not been able to successfully install that software. It gets to the
exact same spot (says that it is 5 sec from finishing the MSDE setup) and
then quits with an error every time. I've tried manually installing MSDE
and the symptoms and results are exactly the same -- each and every time.
I've verified that File & print sharing are installed and enabled. I've
verified that my policy is to install unsigned drivers. I've cleaned out
the registry of failed attempt entries. I've removed all of the file
directories. I've run the MDAC repair that I found in another post here.
I've got the setup logs and the error logs, including the verbose log from
my manual attempt but it has not helped me.
Nothing has made one single iota of a difference. Kinda like trying to
teach a pig to tell time -- won't work, just irritates the pig and
frustrates you.
Now, here's the kicker: I tried the install on my wife's machine and it
went perfectly. Installed without a hitch.
The logs (setup & error) are similar, but as you might guess, differ in a
couple of key respects. I have put the successful setup log and error log
into a spreadsheet along with the unsuccessful setup log and error log.
I've matched the common entries from both on the same row and hi-lighted the
differences.
If there is someone here that can help me I can provide this file, or
anything else related that you might need, via e-mail.
Can someone give me a hand with this?
Frustrated in Seattle
I ran the verification software and it showed that I had all MDAC 2.8 sp1
components installed with no differences/issues detected.
I noticed that I don't have a service, much less one running, for MSSQL. So
I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express. It installed perfectly and
afterwards the service was there and running. However, MSDE still wouldn't
install -- exact same behavior.
I did find another log [extension was ".out"] and it also is pointing to an
ODBC problem. Nowhere in any instructions does it say anything about
setting up any ODBC connections so I suspect this may be a red herring. But
I did put it right after this note for reference.
I clearly don't know what I'm talking about but I'm getting the sense that I
don't really need SQL Server installed because MSDE is supposed to be some
sort of "light" version for the desktop. So the fact that MSDE is not
installing may account for why there was no MSSQL service before I installed
SQL Server 2005 Express.
Btw, I've verified that File & Print sharing is enabled and that unsigned
drivers are set to install automatically -- two things that MS KB identified
as potential related issues. I've gone through and completely removed all
registry vestiges of the product and the file directories and started over
from scratch. The result was exactly the same.
The first error that it encounters is when it tries to configure the new
server it's installing and it's an unrecoverable error. I've included the
log entries for that as well.
Still looking for help. Sigh...

this error is usually related to

but I do think you already noticed and tried it's advices...
another non indicated cause I'm aware of is related to MDAC stack
corruption, as you alredy reported, tha could be fixed as reported in

would. It appears that there is some expectation that I would already have
a Microsoft Sql Server directory under the Program Files directory and
possibly even an SQLSERVER service running. Is that right? I have neither

Can you confirm what I should be looking for please?

not from the XP Pro CD.
I reinstalled it and then my video editing software was able to install the
instance that it needed.

MSDE setup failed

was installing MSDE for use with Web matrix
thot had done all correctly ie the setup.exe sapwd=xxxxx securitymode=sql from the command prompt
was told that setup has failed
where is the problemWas there any other information provided with the error message? If the message was "Setup Failed to configure the server" then this might help:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816499&Product=sql

Also, there should be a setup log created that might have more information.

MSDE Setup Failed

Need Help !!!!

I'm trying to install MSDE on my computer - Dell 2.4 ghz
Operating system is Windows XP Professional.
I have already installed the WEB Matrix but having problems installing MSDE.
I keep getting this error message.

I receive this error message:

(Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error
logs for more information.)

Thanks In AdvanceSigh. Setting up MSDE is one of the most complex things that Microsoft has imposed on us.

What do the logs say? They're usually a pretty good source of information.

Don|||Hi Don,
Thanks for taking the time, Here's the latest log I found. see if this can help?
Thanks again

·Went to my C Drive and removed/deleted the (sql2ksp3 folder)

MSDE setup errors - Act! 2005

My problem originates with trying to install Act! 2005.
This latest ver of Act! now requires MSDE 2000A. When the
program itself tries to install (along with MSDE in the

tech support suggested I try installing MSDE myself. That

follow thru on the setup?

MSDE Setup and first database

I'm deploying MSDE with a desktop app (windows forms .net).
after installing MSDE, how do I create the database for the application?
I cannot provide a createdb.sql script to the user because there is no
queryanalyzer or similar tools.
How can I run the create query from the setup? or what is the recommended
method for doing this?
Thank You!
Hi,
Give a batch file to create the database. All you have to do is double click
the batch file. batch file should contain:-
OSQL -Usa -Ppassword -S servername -Q'Create database
dbname' -o'c:\createdb.log'
Save the command inside a .BAT file and send to client side to create the
database. Instad of giving the -Q parameter you
can also input a .SQL file which contans sequence of TSQL commands.
Thanks

MSDE setup / installation

Hi
I am a beginner in this, may I asked some basic question
1. do I need any version of MSDE before installing MSDE2000 sp3?
2. I have an environment with two servers, each of these has a web server
with a DC running, and I have written a .NET application for administrator
to maintain user a/c in this domain. Now, I would like to use a MSDE server
for keeping logs.
Can I have an installation of MSDE on each of these servers such that the
two installation would synchronize on a periodic basis?
Please note that changes of records are expected on either of these servers!
TIA

no, you can just directly install MSDE Rel A (sp3a level) and upgrade to sp4
via http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp4.mspx MSDE package (or
directly install MSDE at the sp4 level... but currently it's not clear to me
if general users not owning a "required" SQL Server license as per
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp are eligile for
direct sp4 use... just a note, Microsoft representatives already exposed a
refresh of MSDE Rel A updated at sp4 level will be made available...)

yes, you can install MSDE on both servers, and even provide a replication
paht between the 2 MSDE instances, as MSDE supports merge and snapshot
replication
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...lover_694n.asp)
but, unfortunately, without Enterprise Manager tool it will be not trivial
to set it up

If your download file for sp3 is about 60-70mb then know it will install
MSDE at the same time if not present. You would be better using the
MSDERelA package (which includes sp3).

Yes. You can have as many instances per server as you like (well up to
16 anyway - I think thats the right number). Yes you can use DTS to
keep the servers synchronised (you would normally pick one as the master
however). Just make sure your database and table design are decent (ie:
Primary Keys etc).

MSDE Setup -- Wheres the Server?

I am using VB.net to build ASP.net pages. I finally decided it was time to start using SQL server based code. So, I installed MSDE...or so I thought.

I have the server Icon in the bottom systray and it's green and seems to be running.

I have been able to use Microsoft Access' Database Upgrade Wizard to create BB.adp file.

An in VB.net I see a master.dbo connection in Server Explorer.

But I can't figure out how to access the database via the SQL server. When I right click on Server Explorer...the Create a New SQL database menu item is greyed out.

My concern is that my installation is not complete and/or I don't know how to locate and verify the server.

Any help would be appreciated. ThanksMSDN link http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnmsde/html/msderoadmap.asp to run thru the details.

MSDE security (still confused!)

I am distributing my application which includes MSDE 2000. My setup program
attaches .MDF and .LDF files once instance of MSDE 2000 is installed on the
customer’s computer. Now my worry is how can I restrict customers running W2k
or XP from accessing my database using EM or third party GUI’s. If customers
are running W2k or XP and have administrative privileges they can easily
register the installed instance of MSDE with EM and access the data
structure, stored proc etc?
I tested it on a computer which is running W2k, I logged in as
Administrator, ran my Setup program to install MSDE, attach .MDF and .LDF,
..NET framework, MDAC and my application. Then I installed EM and registered
an instance of installed MSDE with it. I could access everything in the
attached db.
How can I prevent this, as data structure, stored proc etc means a lot and
can’t let anyone steal it.
Thanks
Hi Job,
You're not going to like the answer but you can't. If the user has admin
privileges on the system, you can't keep them out. You can make it difficult
for them but you can't actually keep them out. There are many things they
can do to get back in.
You might need to look at encrypting your stored procs (ie create them WITH
ENCRYPTION). That at least might be a start.

|||That was the last thing I wanted to hear. What’s the point of having windows
authentication in first place, when its will leave your database system
vulnerable. Why MS has designed it this way, where does all security features
goes? How can you ensure that you are designing robust and secure database
system? Imagine you spending weeks on designing your database system to find
out that there’s no secured way to conceal it. I can’t even use Access as I
can’t run stored proc with it? Is there any other better solution available?

A logical move would be from MSDE to SQL Server running on a server
platform. While similar issues exist with folks that have local
administrative access, you can lock down your instance of SQL Server fairly
tightly. Combine that with stored procedure encryption and possibly, file
level encryption you should be able to go a long way to protect your
intellectual investment.

MSDE Replication issue

I am trying merge replication between two instances of MSDE on two
different machines on LAN.
I have setup the snapshot agent . when I try running the agent using
sp_start_job @.job_name='MergeSnapshot'
I get an error message saying job name ('MergeSnapshot') does not exist
I am new to replication and trying this for the first time...
Any help is appreciated.

in addition to folder delete, try cealning the Windows Registry too, as
reported in

is for those who have sql sever installed before. My
computer did not contains any sql sever before (I think).
Could you give me more hints on what I should delete?
Furthermore, I found a strange registry. It
is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microso ft SQL

Should I delete this?
Thank you for your help.

personally I always and only cleared the registry keys reported in the KB
article... as you already read, this does not clear the Windows Installer
registry entries, but I was quiet happy with this method when a MSDE
instance I installed refused to uninstall... I still have this entry in the
Add/Remove programs applet, but I'll remove it ...perhaps =;-D
the hive you notice shoul'd only point to a Temp folder used by the setup
process...
you wrote[vbcol=seagreen]
uncomplete installations can make the system dirty, so you are supposed to
clear it before re-proceeding with new installs...

MSDE Problem - SQL Server not found or access denied

I am running the MSDE 2000 Setup off the SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition CD.

After installation is complete, there is a service under the Control Panel -> Services window
called MSSQL$GregInstance. I then start that service.

But now when I try to connect to the database using

osql -E -S GregInstance

I get told that the SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Even though the server is running. I have also tried

osql -E -S localhost

but no luck. Why can it not find the instance of SQL Server?

Note : SQL Server 2000 is not installed on the machine, only this MSDE instance.

Thanks
GregNot to worry, I forgot to add in the name of the pc with a \ before the instance name...

i.e

osql -E -S GREG\GregInstance
