MSDE Toolkit issue with windows 98

Hello,
My 1st attempt to install .Net framework, MSDE, my application and the databases during setup (using the MSDE deployment toolkit RC) works fine on windows xp. Now when I try to do the same for windows 98 SE machine, I am able to install .Net framweork an
d MSDE, but after that during the installation I get the following error message:
"An exception occured in the OnAfterInstall event handler of DBInstaller.CustomInstaller --> Unable to access service: Operating system does not support controlling a Windows service. A service can only be controlled on Windows NT, Windows 2000, or lat
er."
It's clear that when the setup tries to start the service to create the database etc it fails. Is this a known issue. I researched on web but couldn't find anything. Any ideas.
Thanks

|||Hello,
I have seen the exact same problem on both Windows XP PRO and a Windows 2003
Server.
MSDE2000 Release A will not always install again after it has been
un-installed. I have never seen this problem on my own development machine,
only on customers machines installing our product!
So my guess is that on my machine where ex. Visual Studio .NET is installed
something is eliminating the problem... but NOT on a standard Windows XP PRO
or Windoes 2003 Server!
My question: Is there a solution to the problem or not ?
I can see a lot of people have had the same problem...

uninstalling MSDE (often) does non properly clear MSDE related file system
and registry entries, and this often confuses users... a proper (and manual)
clean up is required, as indicated in

Thank you for your reply. I guess we have to make a custom application to
fix the problem. It's just not easy when I can't reproduce the problem on my

|||Hi,
For your information:
I have found a way to reproduce the MSDE re-installation problem.
If the value InstanceComponentSet.1 exist in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Component Set MSDE
will NOT install.
To make the MSDE install simply delete InstanceComponentSet.1 and everything
seems to work fine again.

MSDE SP4 installation problem

Having a real problem installing SP4 on MSDE. I've read the notes that come
along with the install files and I've tried most every combination that
makes sense in the command line. Here's just one example:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun SECURITYMODE=sql UPGRADEUSER=sa
UPGRADEPWD=apasswoord
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v c:\mylog.log
It's the default instance. The setup command simply returns immediately, no
log created etc.
I'm at a loss to know what's wrong here.
Thanks for any input you can offer.
jimI believe I have fixed this, appears to be in the comand line arguments. I
couldn't get them to work as in the supplied examples, but still haven't
solved the original problem, which is my other post -'Dist Query Problem'

MSDE SP4 Install problems - invalid instance name

Hi,
Seen this question posted in several places, but none of the fixes stated
have done the trick. I'm trying to patch several MSDE instances installed by
Sharepoint. Instance names are SHAREPOINT.All three instances are installed
on W2k3 Servers. When I run the install from the cmd prompt, I use:
<install Dir>\setup /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME=SHAREPOINT /L*v
c:\MSDELog.log
I have also tried
<install Dir>\setup /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME=SHAREPOINT
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v c:\MSDELog.log
Same thing happens. I get an errors that states:"The instance name specified
is invalid". I know this to be untrue - I can query the databases in it
using SQL Client tools (Query analyser)
I've checked out the install package that was used in the registry(
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\95C756568A324 7948B0EAB40BE0DE4F4\SourceList)
which suggests SQLRUN16.msi was used for the install. As this is the case,
all the documentation says I can use SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE
for the installation. However, it still fails.
I have also had to install SP4 onto several instances created by the MS CRM
Outlook client. To do this I have used the following cmd in the cmd prompt:
<install Dir>\setup /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME=CRM /L*v c:\MSDELog.log
This works perfectly.However, I cannot do this on any of my SHAREPOINT
Instances.
Can anyone assist please?
Many Thanks
John

Share Point installs a different version of MSDE, known as WMSDE where some
intrinsic MSDE limits has been removed (2gb data file per database) in order
to fullfill Share Point needs and requirements...
so, in my understanding, I think you have to get the new WMSDE package to
upgrade your Share Point instances...

First of all, many thanks for the reply. Could you post a URL to where I can
download the new WMSDE Patch? I've searched, but all I could find was a
Critical Update and a service pack for Sharepoint. Do I need to install the
who service pack? I thought I had already done that, and my SMS 2003 is not
telling me that the Service Pack is required, only the msde instance
requires updating

MSDE SP4 install problem

I attempted to install MSDE SP4 (file SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU) on a WinXP Pro SP2 machine.

Command used:

setup SAPWD="ourpw" SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v c:\MSDELog.log

Install log shows successful install.

MSDE appears to function properly, service starts automatically after reboot, etc.

I can open and work with DB's with a freebie 3rd party GUI called DbaMGR2K, through which I have added the necessary DB user for our locally running ASP application to use the db.

However, when I try to use the DB with our locally running ASP application - connecting with ADO from a dll we wrote, I get the following:

"[DNETLIB]{ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied"

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

make sure that you connect to the same database and you are using a valid login for connecting. Perhaps you have chosen another authentication mode within the ADO code ? That could explain either the one or the other error message you are getting.

I think we have solved the issue. We used the SQL Server Network Utility to enable TCP/IP (apparently not enabled by default) and now all appears well.

I wonder if there is a way to enable TCP/IP during the install process. Is there an install flag/option?

|||

>> Is there an install flag/option?

Most likely. The flag for this when installing SP3 was "DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0". I wouldn't think that they would have removed it for SP4.

MSDE sp3 install problems

I recently had to install 40 german NT 4 laptops with MSDE sp3.

I prepared a setup.ini file:
[Options]
DATADIR="C:\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\"
TARGETDIR="C:\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\"
SAPWD="AStrongPwd"
SECURITYMODE=SQL

and installed most of them sucessfully. Some of them I installed via network, some of them were installed from CD. I tested each installation by copying a prepared database into the data directory and tried to connect to this database using the specified sapwd and found out
When i installed from CD, I could connect to the databases.
Some of the network installs produce a logon failure. it looks like the sapwd was ignored during install - I could not figure out, which password was used, I uninstalled it and reinstalled from CD.

Does anyone know what's the reason for this behaviour?

Thanks,

clothildeGet any information from SQLSTP.LOG on those failed installations for this behaviour.

you have then to provide your own custom tool, which will then pass al

my message was complete... LOL
I apologise if it was not clear
you have to implement a vb/vc/.net/delphi pre-installer, which collects all
user's input regarding settings like SAPWD, DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS,
INSTANCENAME, SECURITYMODE, TARGETDIR, DATADIR and COLLATION (for sort
order)...
then you have shell out to setup.exe passing all parameters (or setting them
in the referenced INI file)
as regard COLLATION, you can not change the system collation after the
instance has been installed...

MSDE setup problems

I am attempting to install SharePoint Services (with
MSDE) using all standard/default options. The WSS setup
appears to proceed normally until it attempts to
configure the MSDE. This portion of the WSS setup fails
and I receive the following error message:
MICROSFOT SQL SERVER DESKTOP ENGINE
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server
error logs and setup error logs for more information.
Not sure where to find these two logs are located or why
the MSDE setup failed.
Any help resolving this problem will be appreciated.

MSDE Setup Failed

Need Help !!!!

I'm trying to install MSDE on my computer - Dell 2.4 ghz
Operating system is Windows XP Professional.
I have already installed the WEB Matrix but having problems installing MSDE.
I keep getting this error message.

I receive this error message:

(Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error
logs for more information.)

Thanks In AdvanceSigh. Setting up MSDE is one of the most complex things that Microsoft has imposed on us.

What do the logs say? They're usually a pretty good source of information.

Don|||Hi Don,
Thanks for taking the time, Here's the latest log I found. see if this can help?
Thanks again

Jeff

·Then Restart computer, and reinstall (sql2ksp3) again – thus eliminating the roll back error

Reinstalling sql2kDesksp3

MSDE setup errors - Act! 2005

My problem originates with trying to install Act! 2005.
This latest ver of Act! now requires MSDE 2000A. When the
program itself tries to install (along with MSDE in the
background), it hangs at the end, with Error 1603. Their
tech support suggested I try installing MSDE myself. That
install setup hung at the end, causing the error log
language below. Any suggestions on how to get MSDE to
follow thru on the setup?

MSDE Settings not being used

I'm trying to install MSDE 2000 in and XP environment. I want to install it in a specific sub-directory therfore, I'm using a setting ini file to give the instance name, target dir and data dir. I've included both the command line and ini file below:
Command Line Entry:
C:\MSDE2000\setup.exe SAPWD="xxxxxx" /settings "C:\SageQuestLou\DispatcherDB.INI" /L*v C:\SageQuestLou\MSDE.LOG
Settings file:
INSTANCENAME=SageQuest
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
SECURITYMODE=SQL
DATADIR="C:\SageQuestLou\Data\"
TARGETDIR="C:\SageQuestLou\"
The installation does occur successfully however it installs using default parameters. However I don't know what the SA password is and it's not where I want it to be.
Can some tell me what wrong with my command line or ini file?
Thanks

try this to solve pwd problem:

MSDE Seems to Install - Service Manager Loads - No Connection

Hi,
I uninstalled MSDE 2000 prior to installing SQL Server 2000 Developer
Edition. I then found I could not use Developer Edition with Visual Basic
..net Standard Edition and tried to reinstall MSDE. The installation seems
to go fine but when the Service Manager loads is tells me "Not Connected -
\\" no servers are in the Server drop-down and no services are listed in
the Services drop-down. I am very new to all of this and would very much
appreciate any help/advice you could offer. I have since uninstalled
Developer Edition to no avail. I am running Windows XP Pro.

I posted this in the vb group as well, but just in case...
I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong, but perhaps the instructions we
use for classroom/lab installs of MSDE to work with Visual Studio .NET 2003

1. Before you begin, check the PC to ensure there are no remnants of prior
MSDE installation attempts hanging around. The place to check is: C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server. If you locate a folder named Microsoft SQL
Server, delete it and its contents!
2. Execute the file: SQL2KDeskSP3.exe(or whatever the file name for your
MSDE download is). This step will extract the contents of the file to a
designated folder. Make a note of the destination folder. You'll need it
later. This step does not install MSDE (although the dialogs seem to hint
that it does)!
4. Navigate to the folder you created in Step 2. In that folder, you will
find a subfolder named MSDE. In MSDE, you will find SETUP.EXE. Executing
SETUP.EXE will install MSDE.
5. To execute SETUP.EXE correctly, you must supply an instance name and a
system administrator password as part of the command: i.e. the command must
be:
SETUP.EXE INSTANCENAME="NetSDK" SAPWD="yourSAPassword"
where yourSAPassword is your actual system administrator password. This
password is needed only to install MDSE, not to use it. Access to MSDE is
controlled by normal "NT Security" which should allow users access based on
network logon and password. It is very important the the INSTANCENAME
parameter be NetSDK, as this name will enable you to generate the sample
databases automatically instead of having to run SQL scripts from the
command line.
6. Once installation is complete, you must reboot the PC before you will
see MSDE. After the reboot, you should see the MSDE icon in SysTray.
7. You now must execute the file: ConfigSamples.exe to configure sample
applications and MSDE system databases. This step will also create user
databases in the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\Data.
</quote>
If you have trouble locating the ConfigSamples.exe, it's a small file
(56k) and I can send it to your email if needed.
Hope this helps.

I do not think you can separate oSql.exe from the full MSDE package from a
legal point of view..
but perhaps you've better ask Microsoft representatives...

again, I'm not sure you can "cannibalize" osql.exe that way... of course,
having a full SQL Server licence, you can install the Client Tools, that
include quiet all tools... but this way I'm little skeptic... but I'm not a

MSDE Rel A stops during install

My installation of MSDE Rel A is stopping at the
following point in the log file:
Starting custom action InstallSqlRedis
Executing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80
\Tools\Binn\sqlredis.exe /q:a"
MSI (c) (B0:E4) [16:21:46:280]: Font created. Charset:
Req=0, Ret=0, Font: Req=MS Shell Dlg, Ret=MS Shell Dlg
Installation of the Microsoft Data Access Components
package failed.
MSI (s) (30!FC) [16:21:48:908]: Product: Microsoft SQL
Server Desktop Engine -- Installation of the Microsoft
Data Access Components package failed.
Action ended 16:21:48: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
MSI (s) (30:B0) [16:21:48:978]: User policy
value 'DisableRollback' is 0
MSI (s) (30:B0) [16:21:48:978]: Machine policy
value 'DisableRollback' is 0
In order to get package failed comment, I have to "End
Task" on the sqlredis.exe from the task manager. No disk
activity is occuring. I tried on another box that has XP
Pro SP2 installed and it went on just fine.
Is there something installed that is blocking this.
I have the full line of Office products installed.

try fixing the MDAC stack, which is currently not available as a refrresh
separated package for Win XP sp 2...
first, locate the mdac.inf file in c:\windows\inf right click and install..
when prompted for a location, point to
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386
then when prompted for the XP cd, either load the cd or point to your
\i386...

|||Hi Andrea, I tried the fix you described and I stop at the same point.
I have the following in my task manager: (Hope this helps)
setup.exe
setupre.exe
sqlredis.exe
The timer on the Microsoft SqlServer shows 17 seconds. (This may not help)
Is there a install file or something I can modify to not make this install
happen quietly?
Thanks

unfortunately, usually fixing the MDAC stack or manually running the
sqlredis.exe (which actually install/update MDAC) before the re-installation
does the trick....

Any other information I can provide that may help?

nope, as no refresh distribution is available for MDAC 2.8 WinXP sp2...
just a note... you can eventually try downloading and installing the new sp4
from SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE (full sp4 page at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)
which include a modified setup that better checks and installs MDAC only
when and if needed..

|||Believe it or not, killing setupre.exe with the task manager once your setup
is frozen will allow the install to complete successfully. Not exactly a
Microsoft recommended solution, but it got me unstuck when I read about it
somewhere else.

MSDE refuses to install on Server 2003

Hi,
I'm trying to install some apps onto one of my server 2003 boxes, on one
server it all goes fine, on the other however the msde installations all
give up and rollback I just get errors in the event logs that state that the
installation failed. Any ideas? It won't even let me install the vanilla
MSDE 2000 rel A on with the default options.
The only installed version of sql/msde appears to be the default Active
Directory stuff. Help!

MSDE refuses to install

I have installed MSDE2000 on several new laptops and wrokstations but for
some reason, I have one new sony vaio that the msde installer gets so far
and then rolls itself back. The event viewer just says that it failed to
install event ID 11708. I am logged in with administrator account and have
shared both hard drives. I am at loss for an answer.

I just downloaded the newer version MSDE2000A and it installed when I
provided the SAPWD.
