msde sp4 autostart sqlagent and other fun

Since msde sp4 changes sqlagent to manual start, I found scm to reset
it back to automatic.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn>scm -Action 7
-Service sqlserveragent -SvcStartT
ype 2
To get msde sp4 to update my default instance, I had to set sqlagent
'log on as' to Local System Account. Other wise it kept uninstalling.
Anyone know syntax to use scm to set the sqlagent log to Local System
Account and then back to my original user after install? Other means?
Needs to be script or bat happy solution.

I know that sp4 changed something about the account requirements to run it's
services... the information provided in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=283811 is no longer valid.. I'm checking
this article weekly for addendum, still with no luck...
still running my MSDE sp4 boxes under Local System too...

MSDE Rel A stops during install

My installation of MSDE Rel A is stopping at the
following point in the log file:
Starting custom action InstallSqlRedis
Executing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80
\Tools\Binn\sqlredis.exe /q:a"

In order to get package failed comment, I have to "End
Task" on the sqlredis.exe from the task manager. No disk
activity is occuring. I tried on another box that has XP
Pro SP2 installed and it went on just fine.
Is there something installed that is blocking this.
I have the full line of Office products installed.

try fixing the MDAC stack, which is currently not available as a refrresh
separated package for Win XP sp 2...
first, locate the mdac.inf file in c:\windows\inf right click and install..
when prompted for a location, point to
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386
then when prompted for the XP cd, either load the cd or point to your
\i386...

I have the following in my task manager: (Hope this helps)
setup.exe
setupre.exe
sqlredis.exe
The timer on the Microsoft SqlServer shows 17 seconds. (This may not help)
Is there a install file or something I can modify to not make this install
happen quietly?

unfortunately, usually fixing the MDAC stack or manually running the
sqlredis.exe (which actually install/update MDAC) before the re-installation
does the trick....

may work.

nope, as no refresh distribution is available for MDAC 2.8 WinXP sp2...
just a note... you can eventually try downloading and installing the new sp4
from SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE (full sp4 page at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)
which include a modified setup that better checks and installs MDAC only
when and if needed..

|||Believe it or not, killing setupre.exe with the task manager once your setup
is frozen will allow the install to complete successfully. Not exactly a
Microsoft recommended solution, but it got me unstuck when I read about it
somewhere else.

MSDE Management Tools

Hi all
Has anyone used the MSDE Manager Program from Vale Software? I am chasing
any reviews, thoughts and praise/criticism of the software. I have the
trial version and it appears to be ok, just wondering if there are any known
bugs etc.
Also, are there many other SQL Server/MSDE management tools (similar to
Enterprise Manager) on the market. I am developing some off the shelf
software and was hoping to make use of MSDE to lower costs (current software
version implemented in Access but looking for a client/server
implementation). Unfortunately due to the nature of our clients we need
something nice to manage the database/s, specifically a tool that includes
the maintenance plan wizard/feature of Enterprise Manager.> Also, are there many other SQL Server/MSDE management tools (similar to

msde login problem

I installed MSDE in my computer. When I try to connect to a database from a
program I get an error message:
Code = 80004005
Code meaning = Unspecified error
Source = Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Description = Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with
a trusted SQL Server connection.
Please help.

By default, MSDE is installed with Windows Authentication only. So
unless you've changed it to mixed mode you'll only be able to login with
trusted logins (not 'sa'). To change to mixed mode you have to change a
reg value, viz.
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\LoginMode" or
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<Instance
Name>\MSSQLServer\LoginMode" for a named instance (detailed in

values for the reg key are:
1 - Windows only mode

MSDE log file grown to 7 gig.

We have a software program that uses MSDE and the log file
is currently at 7 gigabytes in size which is abnormal.
When I do a backup using the softwares utility the backup
is only about 12 meg but when i restore to a fresh install
of windows the log file is right back at 7 gigabytes.
Whats wrong with the MSDE and how do it shrink/correct
this?

about simple recovery model, I would not be that fast in changing it and I'd
consider my whole recovery strategy...

He obviously needs to do that. Until he does though, there is no reason
to have the database in simple recovery mode. He then has a constant
maintenance nightmare and something extra to worry about. He should set it
to simple, figure out what he's doing, then reapproach the situation.

MSDE instance setup question

I needed to distribute the MSDE components to the computers that use my
software so I decided to build a setup program using InstallShield that
included the MSDE files.
After I ran the installation, I noticed that the setup created a folder on
my computer using the MSDE instance name I told the setup program to used
prefixed by a "$" character. So the folder created for an instance named
such as MACHOGRANDE was "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$MACHOGRANDE"
After noticing that, I went on to explore this folder and notice that it had
a bunch of files in it, I was surprised to see that one of the files was
named sqlservr.exe! It almost looked like the installation of my MSDE
instance was like a totally independent sql server installation! Like if it
had nothing to do with the other MSDE instance I had running. I doubt this
is the case since I am pretty sure there must be a gazzilion other files
installed on the computer that are sheared by all the database that use the
MSDE engine.
So my question is,
1. Why did the instance of MSDE crated all of this extra files (such as
sqlservr.exe)? Instead of simply created the ldf and mdf files like a
regular SQL server database? Aren't the MSDE and SQL server supposed to be
the same thing?
2. Also is there a special reason for the "$" character"?

The SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) is a redistributable version
of the SQL Server relational database engine. MSDE 2000 is designed to be

For all named instances, it will be identified as MSSQL$<instance name>.

msde installation question.

Hi,
When i install MSDE it creates a folder named "Microsoft SQL
Server\80\..." in Program Files why it create this folder? Is there any way
to bypass this folder installation. thanks a lot

even when specifying a different path for DATADIR and TARGETDIR, MSDE
requires to install some stuff in \Program Files\...
those files, bynaries and executables, are service pack indipendent (the
always are updated at the higher service pack level) and are shared among
all instances installed on the targe pc...

msde installation pro

pls help!!!
I've tried to insatll the msde fr the webmatrix program,and have followed the instructions as said in the website.I aslo get all the screen shots showed on the site,but after 2,3 seconds there is a pop up error message saying,"The instance name specified is invalid".
this is a software that I got through the book Sams teach yorself asp.net in 24hours(the accopmpaning cd has the webmatrix msde n some other software),they have said if we have questions about installing to ask this website.
Need advice as soon as possible!!

MSDE installation failure

I am having trouble getting MSDE to install. This is the error message that
I am getting in the log:

"SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS""
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and
setup error logs for more information.
Action ended 17:30:09: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
My setup Ini file looks like this:

SECURITYMODE=SQL
SAPWD="CDC2004"

I'm not sure of what is wrong. Any recommendations?

Thanks for responding to my message.
I checked this out, but it doesn't seem to apply since this is the first
time I've installed MSDE. I also tried removing SQL Server 2000 from my
computer and trying to install MSDE, but that didn't seem to make a
difference.
I also tried downloading a different version of MSDE, but got the same
result.
Any other idea why this might be happening? Could it be related to having
SQL Server 2000 installed on my PC and it didn't remove completely?

MSDE installation error

Hi, are days that i'm trying to install MSDE on my computer (windows XP service pack 1).
The problem is that when I run the setup program from console using "SAPWD=(Some password) SecurityMode=SQL", it fails with that error log:

Alex.After this are you not able to start MSSql services on the computer? What is the version of ssnetlib.dll, sqlservr.exe?

The only usefull files i can find under the "Microsoft SQL Server" directory that the setup creates, are the log files.
When the setup program fails, it goes backward, in a sort of rollback and it deletes any other files it had installed during the installation process.
That's why, I think, I can't find any of those files you are talking about (ssnetlib.dll and sqlservr.exe) on my computer.|||Do you have some dbs in the DATA dir under the sql server install folder - if yes please move that some place else before starting setup.

I moved them all in a different location so that the DATA directory was empty... didn't work.
The log file still report the same error.
I looked on the net and i found out i'm not the only one with that problem, but i couldn't find anyone who could provide a solution.

I found by myself what was wrong..
I'm running Windows XP home edition, while the professional edition is needed.

message "Login failed for user "null" note associated with
a trusted SQL Server connection"
I'm running setup in the command line mode, what am I
missing in the command line?

Hi,
By default, the MSDE was install with integrated Security. Thats the reason
you are getting this error.
Windows 98 will not support Windows authentication. So use SQL server
authentication to connect to MSDE.

MSDE Installation - Failed to find SqlUpgrade

I have been trying to install MSDE for a week. An appraisal program I need to set up uses it. I have been running changes and believe that I am close.

Section of setup log where it fails:

I did not find anything different in a setup on a laptop that works. I'm unsure where to look.

JimDon't know that error off hand. The biggest problems I ran into installing MSDE have been MDAC version and computer name. I would upgrade to the latest MDAC and also, if I remember correctly, there were limitations on the length of the name and it couldn't have some special characters. The " ' " (single quote) was the biggest I ran into Like "John's computer".

MSDE Install roll-back

Downloading and running "sql2kdesksp3.exe" worked with no problems.

But running the setup program that was created has proved less successful no matter what options I specify. The installation starts but moments from completion the progress bar begins moving backward. No error message is displayed and the installation dialog simply closes.

Looking in the 'Program Files' directly during the installation shows a SQL directly but this directory is deleted before the installation dialog closes.

I've installed 'ASP.NET Web Matrix'.

What is causing the installation to rollback? Is this a licensing issue?

Some of my attempts so far:

setup SAPWD=hello SecurityMode=SQL

setup SAPWD=hello

setup SAPWD=hello INSTANCENAME=sqlstarterkitThe documentaion SUCKS for beginners (like me). I got it to work after giving the ASP.NET Machine user admin privlages, but who knows if that was the issue. I also setup using similar lines that you did.

In my search for an answer, it seems MANY people have this problem, and no one seems willing to give an answer, or a newbie-friendly how-to.

I get the same rollback response after following the installation instructions.

Although the very 1st time I installed it, I did get a little further with the installation. I was
able to restart and was able to see the the little computer icon (with a flashing green light) located on my desktop toolbar at the botton of the screen, that said (SQL Running) when you placed the the mouse pointer over it.

Next I open up the web Matrix and proceeded to create a Database which was almost successful untill I received the following Message:

Unable to connect to the database server.
Login failed for user 'SA' Reason:
Not assoicated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

So next I thought I would uninstall & Reinstall & try again to see if I would have better luck the 2nd time. But Now each time that I have tried to reinstall MSDE "sql2kdesksp3.exe" &
follow the same installation procedure, I'm only able to get as far as Command prompt
setup and installation, then I get the same installation rollback same as what you descibed.

I also wish someone if anybody has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

This effects us a great deal as well. I have to say the whole install
scenario for MSDE 2000 has been incredibly frustrating with many issues that
MS could fix, simply KB articled instead.
You can't depend on users not running applications that occasionally stop
pumping their message queue. This just stops the installer dead.

the thread there was a reference to a knowledge base article. If there is a
workaround could you post a link to that article or white paper please.
Also mentioned is the fact that the other applications can stop the intstall
by their affect on the message queue. Would having the user close all other
programs stop the install from failing in this case?
