I have installed MSDE2000 on several new laptops and wrokstations but for
some reason, I have one new sony vaio that the msde installer gets so far
and then rolls itself back. The event viewer just says that it failed to
install event ID 11708. I am logged in with administrator account and have
shared both hard drives. I am at loss for an answer.

I just downloaded the newer version MSDE2000A and it installed when I
provided the SAPWD.

MSDE on a local computer (not into a LAN)
I try to develop an installer that should install MSDE and an app that needs an MSDE database. But the problem is, that the ODBC (and my installer too) see no MSDE installation if the computer is no part of a network. If i plug the network cable, i can find the MSDE (SQL Server) without a problem. If i unplug it, my installer (and ODBC too) find no MSDE/SQL installation.
Can anyone help me? Maybe should i set another option when i install MSDE to make it work on a local computer that is no part of a network? Any advice would be a bid help.

MSDE installer problem
Hi
I'm working in visual C++ and through it I start MSDE setup.exe. I have to
wait in my VC++ code before the MSDE installer is finished totally. The
problem i'm having is that as soon as I initiate the process of MSDE
setup.exe, i get its finished status in my VC waiting code, though the
installer is still running. I've tried running the MSDE setup.exe from the
command line and i see that the status also come back to prompt just a
second after the setup.exe is run. I was wondering how can i keep the
control from coming back to the setup.exe instantiating application unless
the whole setup.exe is complete. Hope i've made my point clear.

I dont know how it worked in your case but its not supposed to work and i've
checked it too. It wont work coz the Waitforsingleobject would also return
as soon as the process created is finished. and when we run the process
setup.exe, this setup.exe script asks the windows installer service to run
the actull installer and it exits itself thus breaking the
waitforsingleobject lock too. So it would not work for MSDE installer from
C++ code. Anyway thanx for your help.

MSDE install runs after reboot
After installing MSDE SP3a on a windows server 2003 machine, I am prompted for a reboot. Upon rebooting, the installer still seems to be running as a dialog pops up saying something about configuring MSDE. Then the MSDE service is restarted.
This may not sound like a problem, but I am starting the MSDE installer from InstallShield and after rebooting I have no idea when MSDE is done with the database and when I can start running my db config scripts.
What is MSDE doing after reboot? Is it necessary? When do I know it's done? I'm temted to just have my script wait for a minute before running, but that's not very professional, is it?

|||Well, I wish there was a way I could tell it to not restart the service after it has already rebooted. The Reboot isn't my main concern, but more or less after the reboot, the service I just installed with my installshield package is started, and wants t
o run the config script, however, MSDE is still being modfied and the services are restarted again WHILE mine are accessing it, causing error,
hopefully you understand my dilemma, as it's really frustrating to me and there should be a way to get around this...

unfortunately I'm not a Wise pro =;-D
I do install MSDE as a separate package... self contained.... so I do not
care about reboot requirements...

- use a delay, since it's a one time thing. Either use a fixed periode, or
detect if the MSDE services you need are started

|||Well, I wish there was a way I could tell it to not restart the service after it has already rebooted. The Reboot isn't my main concern, but more or less after the reboot, the service I just installed with my installshield package is started, and wants t
o run the config script, however, MSDE is still being modfied and the services are restarted again WHILE mine are accessing it, causing error,
hopefully you understand my dilemma, as it's really frustrating to me and there should be a way to get around this...

unfortunately I'm not a Wise pro =;-D
I do install MSDE as a separate package... self contained.... so I do not
care about reboot requirements...

|||Did you wite your own service app?
You could
- work with dependencies
- use a delay, since it's a one time thing. Either use a fixed periode, or
detect if the MSDE services you need are started

MSDE install for non-admin user
We are packaging our application installer with MSDE. Is there any
specific version of MSDE that we have to use so we don't require admin
users to perform the installation?

if you do not directly consume merge modules, the package is the same both
for MSDE Rel A and for the updated to sp 3a or 4 desktopengine package..

|||We are call the sqlrunxx.msi during installation from MSDE 2000 SP3a.
And, if we do that using non-admin account, it won't work. I believe it
is because it needs to create the new service and everything for this
MSDE instance. Is there any other installation that we should use so we
don't required admin permission during installation?

not that I'm aware of... the install process need to set new services,
install and register lot of COM component... and eventually MDAC it self..
