MSDE Opinions

My software currently runs on Access 2000 Engine. The database is 600 MB and
I can have up to 10 users (6 constantly). I currently run a terminal server
to share out access database. it is Dual XEON 2.8 Ghz with 4 GB RAM.
Is MSDE an option for my setup?
Would I need a second Database server?
Do I need to go all the way up to SQL 2000?
Our software company tells me that MSDE only can handle 10 connections. I
have read that that is not true. Are they basically trying to sell me full
blown SQL for nothing?
Opions greatly appreciated.

Where did they get 10 from? That is a toatly made up number. 5 and 8 are at
least in the docs, but you can exceed them. I have tested heavy loads up to 26
and then my P2-333 server couldn't cope.

Yes, but don't be mad at them. My guess is they don't know better unless they
have load tested it themselvs. MS dosn't allow anyone to publish benchmarks and
there is no reason for MS to advertise them.

I belive MSDE can handle just as much as Enterprise or any other flavor of SQL,
unless you need more than 2Gig of data or 4 CPUs. Here is my tests

MSDE installs almost 90% and then uninstalls itself

Hello,
I am having a problem with installing MSDE on one of the Win2K client
machines. The MSDE setup runs to about 90% installation (progress bar shows
at least) and then seems like focus goes away from the setup progress bar and
then progress bar shows uninstalling (it does not say its uninstalling but
the progress bar starts going left instead of going right) and then setup
exits without any prompt.
For the records we are using MSDE released on August 5, 2000.
I can not ask much questions and will have a one time shot more to resolve
this issue on Thursday. Any help will be apreciated.

Anis

please add the
/L*v "c:\MsdeLog.txt"
command line parameter to your setup.exe call
this will enable verbose logging of the installation process (about 2mb)
where you can search for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries that define error conditions... about 10/15 lines after or before
that entries some (sometime a little cryptic) explanation of the problem is
provided..
anyway, before doing, please verify that File and Printer Sharing is set and
that the Server service is running

MSDE installation rolls back automatically

When i try to install MSDE 1.0 .. it runs the install .. and thenautomatically uninstalls again...

I turned on the Verbose logging.. and found out the InstallSQLAgentSecurity is failing...

How can I get past this error? and what is causing it to fail? I am running the install as a local administrator on windows 2003.

ThanksAny help would be appreciated..|||There should be some other messages in the MSI log. Also, is there anything in the Windows event logs?

Don|||the event log only says that MSDE failed to install... the SQLSERVER Security agent is the first error in the log .... I will check the log again.. and post all the errors that find in it.. i can also post the file online.. if it will help...|||I can't say for sure that it'll help, but it might provide some clues.

MSDE Installation Failures

We have a custom client/server application that runs against MSDE. This
application is distributed to the field through a Setup CD. We used the
Installshield to create the setup program. Most of the times when the user
tries to install the application it fails after MSDE install saying that
"Your SQL Server is either corrupt or has been tampered with.". We try to
install a named instance. I haven't been able to find a solution to this
persistent and annoying problem. Most of my users use xp sp2 os.
Sometimes i have noticed that there is already a default instance of MSDE on
their laptops that came with some other application or the laptop itself. If
I remove that installation and then re-run our installation process it goes
smoothly.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

you usually get this kind of exception when machine name has been changed,
like reported in
http://www.karaszi.com/sqlserver/inf...erver_name.asp
do you perform some "strange" operation at MSDE install time?

|||Nothing "Strange". We actually use the installation package provided by
microsoft and ship it with our CD and it is called from inside of the
installation program.

MSDE install runs after reboot

After installing MSDE SP3a on a windows server 2003 machine, I am prompted for a reboot. Upon rebooting, the installer still seems to be running as a dialog pops up saying something about configuring MSDE. Then the MSDE service is restarted.
This may not sound like a problem, but I am starting the MSDE installer from InstallShield and after rebooting I have no idea when MSDE is done with the database and when I can start running my db config scripts.
What is MSDE doing after reboot? Is it necessary? When do I know it's done? I'm temted to just have my script wait for a minute before running, but that's not very professional, is it?
Thanks,

after reboot, a lot of COM object are registred, including SQL-DMO , MDAC if
versoion required...
service are set...
some users forced not rebooting passing the REBOOT=""ReallySuppress""
WindowsInstaller parameter, but I'm not very confidentent with =;-D

|||Well, I wish there was a way I could tell it to not restart the service after it has already rebooted. The Reboot isn't my main concern, but more or less after the reboot, the service I just installed with my installshield package is started, and wants t

hopefully you understand my dilemma, as it's really frustrating to me and there should be a way to get around this...

unfortunately I'm not a Wise pro =;-D
I do install MSDE as a separate package... self contained.... so I do not
care about reboot requirements...

|||Did you wite your own service app?
You could
- work with dependencies
- use a delay, since it's a one time thing. Either use a fixed periode, or
detect if the MSDE services you need are started

Are you launching the installation from code / any other mechanism that is
waiting for setup.exe to terminate.
There is some weird issue in the MSDE install package that causes the
sqlredis action to hang if anything is waiting for the parent process to exit.
I haven't seen a good answer on why that happens.
Hope that helps

MSDE Failed Install

I've tried installing the full MSDERelA, and it runs, giving a "Gathering
Required Information". It then promptly disappears, and nothing further
happens. The KB has a similar error happening with RTM, but I am trying to do
a fresh install.
You might try first lookng at Add/Remove programs to see if Microsoft SQL
Server shows on the list of programs. If it's there, uninstall it.
Look under the Program Files Directory for some type of Install folders. If
you see something there with a date and time that resembles the date and
time of a failed install (may not be today if you were trying to do this
some other time) delete the folders.
I had this problem, and after I ditched those folders, I was eventually able
to get it installed.
