MSDE SetUp Hell: Newbie Help

I am trying to setup MSDE for the very first time. So I am absolutely a
newbie. I downloaded sql2ksp3 from microsoft site. I unpacked the file to a
folder and then clicked on setup.
I get an error message about using the command line to supply a strong
password and the setup exits...
I use the command line to supply a password like
setup SAPWD="Pwd777b7" and then the setup seems to install or change some
files.
I click on the setup again and I get an error an invalid Instance name name
error. I have read and reread the (from a first user's point of view) the
very unhelpful help file I download with MSDE setup.
I have been going back and forth on this. Anyone know what's wrong... Anyone
know of a URL where I can find a step-by-step method of installing MSDE.
Thanks in advance

you should have a new default instace of MSDE installed, with no network
protocols enabled and allowing only Windows authenticated connections..
please verify using the Windows Services applet (control panel->management
tools->services) you have a MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT entry for the
related services...

it failed as you tried that way to install a second default instance of MSDE
and ony 1 default instace is allowed... you can install other (up to 15, for
a max of 16 instances in total) named instances providing the additional
parameter
INSTANCENAME=whatever_name

if you can read/understand french,
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jm.doudoux/m...msde/msde.htm, if you can
read/understand italian, http://www.visual-basic.it/articoli/scMsde01.htm,
but I do not know english sites
anyway, you should not just click on the setup.exe boostrap installer but
call it from a command window and provide all the required parameters,
usually (depending on your needs) in the form of
c:\...\>setupe.exe INSTANCENAME=whatever SAPWD=your_strong_pwd
SECURITYMODE=SQL DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v "C:\MSDELOG.txt"
this typical command line will install a named instance named "whatever",
with "sa" login pwd = "your_strong_pwd", enabling SQL Server standard
connections (mixed mode authentication, allowing both integrated security a
standard SQL Server connections), enabling network protocols and thus
enabling remote connections and finally enabling verbose logging of the
installation process to a text file of about 2mb for a successfull
installation you can inspect in case of troubles for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries... this entries are localized in the particular MSDE localized
flavour, and about 10/15 lines before each entry some (sometime cryptic)
description of the problem will be reported...

MSDE sa password - newbie

I downloaded and installed (somehow) MSDE a couple weeks ago but have not used it. Now I try to access MSDE using sa account but it does not accept an empty password and I do not remember providing one at install. MSDE appears to be installed because I se

you probably changed the sa password...
try login in using a trusted authenticated Windows login member of the
sysadmin group
all sysadmin are granted privilege to modify password of other user...
then execute (osql, or the query tool of your choice)
EXEC sp_password @.new = 'new_password', @.loginame = 'sa'
in order to modify the forgotten sa pwd..

|||Hi,
If you have not provided a password for the SA login at installation time,
then it should be blank and it should accept it.
What I doubt is the Server name that you would be entering to connect to
the MSDE.
From the folder name that you have sent, I understand that it is a named
instance and you should use "computername\Instancename", in your case
"Computername\VSDOTNET", replace computername with the name of your
computer and try it.

MSDE questions.

Hello, I am new to MS SQL database and have recently downloaded MSDE (Coming
in from an Oracle background). I have installed it and have a couple of
questions.

1.) Is there a product something like SQLPLUS (hopefully shipped with MSDE)
where you can log on to the database and view tables/data/views and so on?

2.) I need to set up an account with a username/password. Is there a
executable that I require to be able to perform this task?

3.) I see Enterprise manager on microsoft website, but is that shipped with
MSDE?

I know that these may sound simple, but I would appreciate your comments.

Kind regards,

Harry.Harry,

MSDE comes with Osql command line utility that you can use to interact with your
server. Unfortunately, MSDE does not come with any UI tool.

Andrea has done a great job at getting a free UI tool for you. You can get more
info at http://www.asql.biz/DbaMgr.shtm
If you're already familiar with T-SQL, you can use our free tool, QALite from
site.

I see that TOAD now comes with a freeware version for SQL Server. I
haven't tried it, but I presume you could use it to connect to MSDE.

Coming from an Oracle background you may have used TOAD before so it
could give you a leg up.

MSDE login problem

Hi all,

I have bought Visual C# .NET 2003 Standard and downloaded the MSDE to use
with it.

I did install it with it's default options and now i'd like to administer it
with Web Data Administrator but it keeps telling me that i should enable SQL
Server Authentication.

So i tried debugging the question creating an .udl file and trying to test
various authentication methods:
- Integrated Windows authentication works fine
- SQL Server authentication (when i try logging in using user 'sa' with the
password i've set keeps telling me that user 'sa' is not associated with a
trusted SQL Server connection.

How do i solve this puzzle? Tried googling (and reading some faqs) but
didn't come up with anything useful.

Unfortunately the Web Data Administrator doesn't allow using integrated NT
authentication. :-(

Thank You,

MSDE installation problems

hi

i have downloaded the free MSDERelA from the official website but when i wanna run the installation, it says

"A strong SA password is needed for security reasons. Please use the SAPWD switch to supply the same"

i read the readme doc but i still cant understand how to install n where to find the SAPWD switch ??

Please guide me
Thank you very muchInstructions here

MSDE Installation problem

Hi All
I am having a little trouble setting up MSDE.
I downloaded the most recent version of MSDE (sql2ksp3.exe) from the Microsoft site to my desktop.
I double clcked on the files to extract them, it created a sql2ksp3 dir on c drive.
I went to command prompt and entered the following in the c:/sql2ksp3/msde directory:
setup.exe DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 SAPWD=**REMOVED** then enter.
The setup wizard started then finished after about 30 seconds.
I can't find MSDE anywhere as program just a folder with the original setup programs.
I know this is a total gummy question, can anyone point me in the right direction.
I didn't have MSDE or SQL Server prevoiusly on the system.
Thanks in advance
PDid you see a new icon in your systray for MSSQLServer?

If you shell out to DOS and type in this, are any results returned?

 osql -L

Terri|||Server:
---NONE----

That's what i got! Can you help me how to fix my problem|||Do you have the SQL Server icon in your systray? It looks like a gray CPU and will likely have a red square on it (and when you hover over it it will say Stopped). You need to right-click on the icon and and choose MSSQLServer - Start. Once you've done this, try the osql -L command again.

Terri|||yes i have SQL Server icon on my systray. I tried to open it but the server is empty. so i put my server name but still cannot connect. I right click also and hit start but still the same. when i hover over it it says"Not Connected". It puzzled me!!|||Hi
Thanks for the reply
No there is no SqlServer Icon.
When I do the DOS command (osql -L) it says that is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Where do I go from here
P|||Installation problems are the most insidious and the most difficult to troubleshoot.

Can you search for sqlsp.log on your machine and see if there's anything useful in it?

Terri|||Hi Terri
I just did the search for sqlsp.log and nothing came up.
I have saved the the sql2ksp3.exe to a cd so I can try it all again.
If I do, which directory should I be installing it in.
I am using XP Pro and I VS.net 2003.
Also what services should Istop to make sure nothing stuffs it up there.
I stopped my firewall and anti-virus last time, should I stop IIS and anything else?
Thanks for your help
Pete|||Also, did the event viewer show anything helpful?

Unfortunately I am not an MSDE installation expert. The best advice I can give is to search these forums for MSDE Install and see what has been advised in the past.

Are you following the instructions atMSDE 2000 for Developers Using Visual Studio .NET or something similar (such asCustomizing Desktop Engine Setup.exe)?

And also you should use verbose logging to a text file so you can review any installation problems, by using an additional command line parameter: /L*v C:\MSDEsetup.log

I would use the default directories for installation.

Terri|||Hi Terri
I tried installing the VS.net version of the MSDE without luck.
I did get a log though, but I wouldn't know where to start to look for the problem.
Is it possible to email you the log file to check out the problem.
There was no errors in the event viewer although the Dreamweaver MX Application
server did startup each time I tried to install the MSDE.
Thx
Pete|||It would better benefit you to either post the log itself here or a link to it. As much as I want to help I am not confident that I will be able to pinpoint your problem and you would benefit from other eyes looking at it as well.

Presumably the problematic area will be at the end of the log file.

Terri|||me again
the command i used was
setup.exe /qb+ INSTANCENAME=VSDOTNET DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 SAPWD=RRR#$GS1 /L*V c:\msdesetup2.log
The log file is like 3,900KB so it is a little large here is the last bit
Needless to say it would take a while to find where it went wrong

once again thx for your help
I am checking the net for solutions, maybe I shouldn't give it an instance name
Pete|||The 2 things I've been able to locate concerning this are: 1) make sure you have the latest MDAC installed and 2) make sure you have the Server service started (You Cannot Install MSDE 2000 if the Server Service Is Not Running).

And I have also seen the recommendation to look for the string "return value 3" in the log file to further identify where the point of failure is.

Terri|||Me again

I found 2 instances of return value 3:

MSDE Installation failure

Hi,
I've downloaded MSDE 2000 R1 from Internet. Tried to install on my PC with
running on Windows XP Pro with SP2.
When everytime i runned the Setup.exe, it will prompt for "A Strong SA
password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply
the same. Refer to readme for more details. Setup will now exit".
Everyone know about this ? anyway to proceed the installation ?
Thank you
You need to either supply commandline arguments, or edit the empty
setup.ini file and supply them as options there. Go to
msdn.microsoft.com and search for articles like: installing MSDE.

MSDE Install Problems

Iam having some problems installing an MSDE database. I have downloaded
MSDE2000A from the microsoft website and iam running the setup from the
command promt using the following command : sql2000.msi BLANKSAPWD=1
the setup starts to run fine, then it gets to a point in the installation
and the progress bar starts to go backwards and the setup exits without any
errors being logged or any indication that the install failed, except that in
the Add / Remove programs section of controll pannel there is nothing related
to MSDE installed.
how can i remedy this situation? It's hard to diagnose with the little information provided.
What version of Windows are you using?
Is there enough disk space?
Do you have admin privileges on the computer?
Watch very carefully while it is installing, an error message may appear on
the screen for just a few seconds before it uninstalls.
Come back with whatever additional information you can provide.

please add the
/L*v "c:\MsdeLog.txt"
parameter to the
c:\...\>setup.exe BLANKSAPWD=1
(btw, BLANKSAPWD=1 is not a very good choice at all)
command line call to the boostrap installer of MSDE... this will enable
verbose logging of the setup process, resulting in an about 2mb text file
(for a succesufll installation) you can inspect in case of problem..
scan the log file for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries... about 10 lines before each entry you will get some (sometime
cryptic) description of the problem..

are you installing MSDE on a Terminal Server session? if this is the case,

MSDE Inatallation

Hi,
I downloaded the MSDE release A (MSDE2000A.exe) from below mentioned link.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Extracted the MSDE2000A.exe to local directory (C:\MSDERelA).
Through Command Prompt executed the following command:
setup SAPWD="sa" INSTANCENAME="Testdb" TARGETDIR="C:\MSDERelA" /L*v
"C:/MSDELog.log"
The following message is popedup:
"Please go to control panel to install adn configure system components"
if click ok, setup is aborted.
Note: My system have Windows XP operating system with Service pack 1
please help to properly install MSDE with the setup downloaded.

MSDE Help

I have never done anything with databases, so I am a newbie. My goal is to install an ASP.NET forum, but I need MSDE installed. I downloaded MSDE from the Microsoft website. When I run the setup.exe file, I get an error. It says:

A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply
same. Refer to readme for more details. Setup will now exit.

I looked at the documentation but could not find anything usefull, what do I have to do to install it. Thanks in advance for responses.Did you try the instructions here?Installing MSDE For ASP.NET Web Matrix Also, if you follow links from there you are led toInstalling a New Instance of MSDE 2000 SP3a which may also help.

Terri|||ok, I followed the instructions, but got yet another error.

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

well, I am not in safe mode, I guess my Windows Installer is not correctly installed, I don't know why that would be. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem.

MSDE Exorcism

Got some problems installing the MSDE I downloaded it from
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/do...s/download.asp
and ran the setup with the following command:
setup SAPWD="testpw" INSTANCENAME="test"
It installs, however, the server is never visible by the SQL Server
Service Manager (although I can type it in manually, but starting it
just tells me It's already started). Nor is it visible by Enterprise
Manager (I installed the client tools to test this). It's not visible
from a Data Link dialog but I can type the name in and connect to it
Plus, here's some additional madness.
From the datalink manager, I can connect only if I use NT integrated
security. If I try something silly like the "sa" and "testpw" which I
passed to setup, I get the error: "Test connection failed because of an
error in initializing provider. Logon failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not
associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
Trying to connect from another machine is fruitless.
I've tried numerous things, reversing the parameters passed to setup,
checking the MDAC version 2.7 Re(something or other). Reinstalling,
rebooting, Standing on my head. prayers, Voodoo, stuffed animal
sacrifice. Nothing works.
Any pointers?

Hi Xavier,
Most likely you don't have network protocols enabled. Try running
svrnetcn.exe (from Start>Run) and check that tcp/ip is enabled. If not,
enable it and restart the MSDE/SQL service.

|||And on top of that, if you want to log in with SQL Server authentication,
you have to chance the registry key
HKEY_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLSERVER\ MSSQLSERVER\LoginMode to 0
(or 2).
You can enable SQL Server authentication when you install MSDE, if you
provide the SECURITYMODE=SQL with setup.exe, together with the sa password.

MSDE EnterPrise manager

I am using MSDE enterprise manager and when I downloaded it, I cannot log onto the SQL Server, which is on my computer, I used the server name defined in the SQL Server Service manager, and it cannot connect. I was trying to set the conection up with the ODBC manager, although I am not even sure if this is the right way. Someone please help me out.Depends on how you installed it. If it's in native Windows authentication mode, you'll need to ask it to connect as the current logged on user. If you've enabled mixed authentication, you can connect using the current user or using a SQL Server user (sa is the "administrator" of SQL Server which you'll have specified a password for during the installation if you enabled mixed auth).

Best way to test the connectivity is by using the SqlConnection class and try to connect that way. The errors you get on invoking the "Open" method will explain what's wrong.

Check out my other post on managing MSDE as well onthis forum. This can be seen as a kind of replacement for the Enterprise Manager of SQL Server.
