I have tried 3 times to install MSDE on my laptop,
different problem each time. I have wiped the hard drive
and reinstalled XP sp2 to try again, downloaded MSDE 2000
rel A. Installed with the command Setup SAPWD="eight"
SECURITYMODE=SQL
COLLATION="SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_Cl_AS" /L*v c:\MSDE.log.
The installation just terminates abruptly. Search
for 'return value 3' turns up this:
An error was encountered during connection to server: 3
Ending custom action UpgDetectBlankSaLogin().
Action ended 9:19:42:
UpgDetectBlankSaLogin.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2 C064397B
.. Return value 3.
Action ended 9:19:42: INSTALL. Return value 3.

I've lost a week on this, getting desparate!
Thanks, Brian

|||try a stronger password than "eight." I had the same issue and the problem
is that rel A wants a secure SA password. It will reject a simple one and
you are left with the error saying there is no password, hence "Ending
custom action 'UpgDetectBlankSaLogin' "
