MSDE Subscriber names

I plan to set up merge replication and have laptops with an MSDE
subscription for replication. I want my application to use the database
name and wondered if I can (and should?) have the same database name on both
the laptop and the main publication. Thanks.

It helps to identify the subscriber database, but there is no real
requirement. All the subscribers should have the same database name if you
are publishing to multiple subscribers at once.

MSDE Maintenance Plan

Hello,

I'm trying to configure my MSDE 2000 installation to dump all databases
and transaction logs to disk every night to be backed up by our backup
software. All goes great in configuring the maintenance plan until I get to
the retention part. I want to configure the backup plan so that it'll delete
OLD backup older than 2 days. When I click the 'Remove files older than" box
and choose 2, but there's nothing in the drop-down box where
Hours/Days/Months should be..
If I fudge it and try to edit the job nothing has saved and the job
fails.. Any help is greatly appreciated..

I have no idea what the issue is, but perhaps you can give some more
information. Are you using the latest version of MSDE? And which
operating system are you working with? Have you been able to create a
plan successfully on an MSSQL server (if you have one, but since you
have EM I guess you do)? Have you tried reinstalling the client tools,
and have you applied the latest servicepack to the client tools?

I have no idea what the issue is, but perhaps you can give some more
information. Are you using the latest version of MSDE? And which
operating system are you working with? Have you been able to create a

MSDE 2000 (8.00.818) SP3

EM Tools is installed on my workstation for managing other SQL Servers.

I am able to do a simple Dump to Disk, but I want to schedule nightly dumps.

Actually I manually modified the 'Steps' of the backup job and added the
necessary code to get the job to complete successfully..

Enterprise Manager. Under my MSDE SQL Server/Management, Database
Maintenance Plans icon does not show up. In my three other SQL Servers (1
MSDE, 2 SQL 2000) this icon does show up. And I cannot right click the
database and choose Maintenance Plans under all tasks. I am doing this via
an Enterprise Manage remotely. When I physically view the Enterprise
Manager I can setup Maintenance Plans however the plans do not work. When I
view the properties, none of the schedule shwos up and I get an error. Is
my only choice to reinstall MSDE and Enterprise Manager? Any ideas?

but, FWIW, you are not allowed to manage MSDE instance with the regular SQL
Server client tools like Enterprise Manager and/or Query Analyzer...
you shoul'd resort on third party tools..

We are designing an application that will use merge replication from a
wireless laptop back to a server. Plan on using MSDE on the laptops, can the
central P.C. that will be on the other end use the MSDE also, or does one of
them need to be full blown SQL Server?

|||Thanks for your information again Hilary.
We have some current applications with MSDE doing Merge replication back to
our servers running MS SQL. So we do have experience setting up and
maintaining it. We just had not set one up with the MSDE on both ends. You
lose having Enterprise Manager in the mix I guess, but we should be able to
plug the laptops into our network here and use Enterprise Manager from my
workstation to set up the publications and subscriptions on the laptops.
